Actor Andre Braugher of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Passes Away at 61

Andre Braugher, a revered actor known for his diverse and impactful roles in television and film, passed away at the age of 61 following a brief illness. His publicist confirmed the news to HuffPost.

Braugher’s acting journey was marked by memorable characters, from the stern yet beloved Captain Raymond Holt in the hit comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” to the intense Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street.” His portrayal of Nick Atwater in “Thief” further showcased his versatility. His film career includes a notable performance in “Glory” (1989), where he played a Union soldier in the groundbreaking story of America’s first all-Black army regiment.

Recently, Braugher was preparing for a new role in the upcoming Netflix series “The Residence,” a project reported by Deadline, which also broke the news of his passing.

Throughout his career, Braugher’s talent was recognized with numerous accolades. He received 11 nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards, winning two, and was honored with two Television Critics Association Awards.

In 2020, Variety noted that despite his acclaimed performances, Braugher never had a leading role in a major commercial success. Reflecting on his career choices, Braugher revealed that he sometimes put family and personal life ahead of career opportunities. He believed this may have impacted his professional trajectory, but he maintained that his life choices were fulfilling.

Known for his privacy, especially regarding personal matters, Braugher once admitted to The New York Times that his life had its challenges, though he preferred not to divulge the specifics.

Andre Braugher, an alumnus of both Stanford University and The Juilliard School, leaves behind a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, who also appeared in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” their three children – Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley, his mother Sally, and his brother Charles Jennings.
